Wine and calories

Wine and calories

January is the month when the gyms are the busiest, we have to burn all those calories that we stored during Christmas, in the form of fat in the least desired places.Too many lunches, dinners, sweets and alcohol make their mark on our physique, so our New Year's resolution is to live a healthier life, but it often happens that because of our pace of life, it is a little difficult for us. to fulfill it.

Wine is one of those alcoholic beverages that cannot be missed in our home, either at lunch or dinner, or at a meeting with friends for a snack. But an alcoholic beverage has calories, and the more alcohol it has, the more calories it will have, so if we're one of those people who's always on a diet but can't resist the temptation of a glass of wine, the only thing we need is to do so is to choose a wine with a lower alcohol content.

In addition, wine is a drink that has many benefits, such as polyphenols, perfect natural antioxidants to keep our skin smooth and young, or why not talk about the calming effect it has on our body, so necessary sometimes on stressful days.

Which wine has fewer calories?

So how do we know which wine has the fewest calories? Well, we need to look at the levels of alcohol he has. As I mentioned in the previous post, on the back of the wine labels this information is written as a percentage. White wines are the ones with the lowest alcohol content, usually not exceeding 13.5 degrees.

There are grape varieties that, by their nature, are lower in calories. In the case of white wines, the Albariño grape variety and the Ribeiro grape variety are the lowest in calories, followed by the white Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Moscatel and Chardonnay varieties.

If we opt for a sparkling white wine, champagne and cava also contain few calories, and if you choose a Brut Nature cava, because it does not contain added sugar, the amount of calories will be even lower.

As for rosé wine, the amount of sugar is similar to that of a white wine, so the caloric intake would be similar. Red wine will always have a higher caloric value.

How do we know how many calories a glass of wine has?

There are numerical calorie tables compiled by nutrition and food study centers, which detail several foods, including wine. After consulting some of them, we inform you that the wine that contains the fewest calories per glass is white wine, so we should not eliminate it from our diet.

For a glass of one hundred milliliters, the caloric intake of a white, rosé or red wine should not exceed ninety calories, a champagne or a cava Brut Nature or Brut would be around eighty calories, but the calories rise little by little when we talk about sweet sparkling wines, white wines with varieties such as Manzanilla or the range of sweet wines. Under these conditions it reaches up to one hundred and thirty calories.

An important detail to keep in mind is that when you serve a glass of wine, you do not fill the whole glass, but barely reach fifty milliliters, and the calorie percentages are always designed for a standard amount of one hundred milliliters. So we have to refer to the amount in the glass not to what is indicated on the label.

What makes you fatter, wine or beer?

Beer has fewer calories / 100ml, but the amount consumed is higher; it's not the same amount we ingest in a pint of beer as in a glass of wine. Moreover, the wine is healthier due to the polyphenols and resveratrol it contains.

If you're wondering, what kind of wine makes you fatter? The answer is clear - sweet wines, because they have a lot of alcohol and a higher concentration of sugar. If, on the other hand, if you want to know what kind of wine makes you fatter, we advise you to always look for wines with a lower alcohol content, such as light white wines; a good Albariño with citrus and floral notes will be the ideal choice for diet menus.

Which wines have the least sugar? Wines with a lower sugar content are dry red or white wines, which can have a maximum of three grams of residual sugar. Residual sugar is the minimum amount of sugar that remains in the wine after it has not been fermented by the yeast.

In Mediterranean culture, for example, wine has always been part of the daily diet, and its moderate consumption is considered beneficial. I would say that wine is not only healthy, but also that a glass of wine will always be synonymous with good company, joy and pleasure.

Our low-calorie wines

Arroyo de Arrayan , a white wine of only thirteen degrees, obtained from fifty-five percent Garnacha Gris and forty-five percent Garnacha Blanca. Eight months of aging for this wine with an intense straw-yellow color, a color that is due to the two days of maceration that the must spends with the skins. It has aromas of white fruit, such as pears, notes of jasmine and camellia, and a slight mineral note. A silky wine that envelops the palace in a unique sensation of aromas. Ideal to combine with dishes that contain chicken, a meat rich in protein, but low in calories.

Eguren Ugarte Tempranillo , a very special dry white wine, because the white Tempranillo grape variety comes from a natural genetic mutation of a red Tempranillo grape variety.

The citrus notes give way to a creamy toasted aroma of French oak barrels in which it is aged for five months. A fine and elegant wine with a well-balanced acidity, ideal to be associated with low-fat cheeses.

Rosé Mencía from Abadía Sa Cova , a young, fresh and fruity wine that is left to rest on the yeast to increase its expressiveness. With an alcohol content of only 12.5 degrees, this wine is ideal to drink as an aperitif or to be associated with Asian dishes.

Forty , also from the Eguren Ugarte family, as its name suggests, refers to the forties, in which people strengthen their love and stabilize personal projects, a beautiful tribute to this decade in the form of a wine with fresh fruit and red fruits, such as plums and blackberries, a wine with three months of aging in barrels that gives it complexity and temperance, a good wine to surprise your friends who are on a diet, because it is a red wine that is only thirteen degrees.

Cava Alsina & Sardà Brut Nature , a quality sparkling wine obtained from traditional varieties, xarello, parellada and macabeo. A forty-eight-month-old cava with a long aging process, which gives it notes of candied white fruit, pastries and nuts, this sparkling wine is full in the mouth, tasty and elegant, with a fine and delicate bubble. It is a perfect dietary appetizer because it has no added sugar and contains only twelve degrees of alcohol.

If you are one of those who set goals at the beginning of the year, or simply want a healthy lifestyle with regular physical activity and healthy menus, we suggest you keep the low-calorie wines recommended above in your list of favorites. Find more options in our store . Keep in mind that dry wines have no added sugar, and white wines have less alcohol, and therefore fewer calories.

Always remember that the best diet is moderation, and wine does not deviate from this rule.
