Herdade do Carvahal
Alentejo
Portugal
In 1999 Fernando Soares founded Herdade do Carvahal, a portuguese winery with 52 hectares of vineyards located in Urra, in the municipality of Portalegre, Portugal. The region of Alto Alentejo has been linked to the winemaking history for centuries.
Portalegre is located in southern Portugal, in the Alentejo region and is the district capital. The city is "wedged" into the foothills of the S. Mamede mountain range in an environment of great natural beauty.
In the area of Portalgre, wineries make mostly white and red wines. The granite soils are ideal to plant and grow the typical Portuguese grape red varieties, such as Aragonês, Grand Noir, Periquita and Trincadeira. With regards to the white varieties, in this area they grow Arinto Galego, Roupeiro, Assario, Manteúdo and Fernão Pires grape varieties.
