Rueda is Verdejo country — and Javier Sanz knows that better than almost anyone, farming 104 hectares of the appellation's vineyards with the meticulous, low-intervention philosophy that has made his estate one of D.O. Rueda's most respected addresses. But Rueda's continental climate — hot summers, cold winters, the vast elevation of the Castilian plateau — turns out to be remarkably well suited to Sauvignon Blanc: giving the variety the natural acidity and mineral precision of cooler European expressions while adding the tropical generosity and floral warmth that only this latitude and this terroir can provide. The result is a Sauvignon Blanc that sits comfortably outside every category: more tropical than Loire, more mineral than Marlborough, more individual than either.
