Bordeaux wines are classified into different Denominations of Origin, from regionally known to world-renowned. The classification system, established in 1855, organises the best estates into different levels based on historical reputation and quality.
A wide range of wines are produced in Bordeaux, from wines for everyday consumption to high quality collector's bottles. The left bank (west of the Gironde estuary) is known to produce mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, while the right bank (east of the Dordogne river) produces mainly Merlot.
