Txakoli is the white wine of the Basque Country — dry, fresh, lightly sparkling in character, and inseparable from the Atlantic landscape, the seafood culture and the way of life of the people who have made it for generations on the steep slopes of Bizkaia. Gorka Izagirre is among the most respected names in the appellation — a family project born in the vineyard and built around 40 hectares of small, carefully tended plots integrated into the Bizkaia landscape, where southeast-facing slopes catch the morning sun and the sea air shapes everything the vine produces. Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Zerratia — two indigenous varieties that exist almost nowhere else in the world — are grown here at the low yields that allow optimum ripening and the structural quality that separates great Txakoli from the merely pleasant. Hand-harvested in October, vinified with the precision and restraint that a family winery with deep roots in this landscape applies naturally, the result is a wine of straw yellow colour, clean dried fruit character and a freshness and dryness on the palate that makes every glass feel like the right one for the moment.
