Mergi la magazinFor most of the 20th century, Godello was disappearing. Replaced by higher-yielding, less interesting varieties across the vineyards of Galicia, it came within a generation of vanishing from commercial production entirely. Its rescue — driven by a handful of winemakers in Valdeorras who recognised what was being lost — is one of the most important stories in Spanish wine.
What they saved is extraordinary. Godello produces white wines of a depth and complexity that Albariño, for all its charm, does not attempt: structured, mineral, with stone fruit and a precision that comes from the ancient granite and slate soils of northwest Spain. The best expressions age for a decade or more. They are wines that reward patience and repay attention.
Valdeorras is the heartland — the DO where the rescue began and where the most classically structured Godello is made. Ribeira Sacra, with its vertiginous slate terraces above the Sil river gorge, produces Godello of a slightly more aromatic character. Bierzo, just across the border into Castilla y León, adds another dimension again.
We carry Godello across all three appellations. If you already love Albariño, this is the next step. If you are new to Galician wine, this is where to begin.
