Elaboration

In 1224, Henri d'Andeli mapped Flavigny as a stronghold of French wine growing under Philippe Auguste. Seven centuries later, Gérard Vermeere — a former surgeon from Dijon — replanted the vines at the foot of the oppidum of Alésia and began the work of restoring what history had left behind. When Vermeere passed away in 2002, Ida Nel took over with a single clear objective: to do everything possible to reclaim the quality that Flavigny-Alésia once enjoyed. Today, 14 hectares of vines over 20 years old grow under environmentally respectful viticulture on a terroir the Côte d'Or had forgotten — and this Chardonnay is the proof that the forgetting was the only mistake.

Winemaker's Notes

Bright yellow in the glass — lively and immediately inviting. On the nose, yellow apple, pineapple and vanilla with the fresh, fruit-forward character of a Chardonnay grown on ancient soils with modern care. On the palate, round and well-balanced — easy, pleasurable and long enough to reward the glass. Best enjoyed with seafood and white meats. Serve at 10°C.

About the Winery

Domaine Flavigny-Alésia was established in 1994 by Gérard Vermeere on one of France's most historically documented wine terroirs — replanting vines at the foot of Alésia in the Auxois, an area with a winemaking tradition stretching to the 13th century. Ida Nel, who took over in 2002, has dedicated the estate to restoring the quality and reputation that Flavigny once held. At Dis&Dis, Domaine Flavigny-Alésia is the discovery that the most interesting French Chardonnay is not always found where the world is already looking — sometimes it is found where a surgeon and a determined woman decided that 800 years of history was worth reviving.
