D.O. Toro sits in the province of Zamora in northwestern Spain — a designation built on Tinta de Toro, a thick-skinned, heat-resistant mutation of Tempranillo that produces wines of extraordinary concentration and character when grown on the ancient, ungrafted vineyards that survived the phylloxera crisis of the 19th century and have been growing here, virtually untouched, ever since. Matsu was founded with a single and completely demanding purpose: to find and preserve the finest of these centenary vineyards, selecting parcels between 80 and 100 years old whose very low production per vine and artisanal cultivation make them among the most precious viticultural assets in Spain. Raúl Acha, the project's Technical Director, identifies these vineyards not as raw material but as living heritage — to be farmed organically, vinified without intervention and bottled without compromise. El Pícaro is the youngest and most accessible expression of that philosophy: the face of a young man on the label, the soul of a century-old vine in the glass.
