The 5 best wineries in Spain

Spain has long been a prolific wine-producing country. It has the largest wine-growing area in the world, with over 9800 square kilometres.

But with about 4,000 wineries and dozens of wine regions, it's hard to know where to start. In this article we decided to present 5 of the best, most famous and visited wineries in Spain.

Bodegas Torres - Vilafranca del Penedès. Catalonia

Bodegas Torres belongs to the Torres family and has been producing wines for almost 150 years, with an extensive international activity. It is the largest winery in Spain. Torres is one of the most admired wine brand in the world, according to Drinks International. Located in Vilafranca del Penedès, but with many other wineries around the world owned by them, Torres is a family business that has grown from generation to generation since 1870.

Penedés: Cavas Codorníu

Spanish sparkling wine, or as the Spaniards call it, Cava, is booming. And where better to experience it than at its oldest manufacturer? In Caves Codorníu, in the Penedés region of Catalonia. Not often do you have the opportunity to enter a winery dating back to 1551 - feel the history inside the 30 kilometres of underground wine caves. In 1976, the Codorníu cellars in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia were declared a "National Monument of Historical and Artistic Interest" by King Juan Carlos I.

Viñas del Vero and Blecua

Its main winery, Viñas del Vero, together with the property of its sister producer of premium wines, Blecua, are overseen by the enigmatic winemaker José Ferrer, who brings a balanced and detailed approach to the craft.

Instead of being paired with a single type of wine, Somontano's unique terroir and climate are perfect for growing an impressive range of indigenous and international grape varieties. "Viñas del Vero is a must-see on a trip to Somontano. You can taste wines of all kinds, from exceptionally well-made Garnacha to Gewürztraminer, from Macabeo to Merlot."

Ollauri, La Rioja: Bodegas Beronia

Perhaps the most famous wine region in Spain, La Rioja is revered for its red wines. The region is divided into three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. This winery is located at a higher altitude in Rioja Alta, benefiting from a fascinating microclimate due to its position between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

Founded in 1973, Beronia is one of the most innovative wineries in la Rioja. They are researching and experimenting with different barrel sizes that combine French and American oak to give the wines a unique balance.

Bodegas Vega Sicilia

It is a Spanish winery located in Ribera del Duero, in the province of Valladolid, Castilla y León (northern Spain).

The winery was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who planted several grapes from the Bordeaux wine region of France, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which are still used in wines today. Since 1982, the same year that Ribera del Duero received Denominación de Origen (D.O.) status, the winery has been owned by the Álvarez family, which is a member of Primum Familiae Vini.

Vega Sicilia wines are recognized worldwide as some of the best and most valuable red wines on the market, with their top wine selling for an average of $ 388 a bottle.

Please note that most wineries and vineyards in Spain remain open to the public, with the necessary COVID-19 health and safety measures in place, as recommended by the government. If you come to Spain, it is very nice to visit some Spanish wineries.
