In 1975, Josh Jensen did something that most of California's wine establishment considered eccentric at best: he spent years searching the Gavilan Mountains of the Central Coast for limestone soils — the same geological foundation that gives Burgundy's greatest Chardonnays their mineral precision and structure — before founding Calera high in the hills and naming it after the Spanish word for lime kiln. Four decades later, the Central Coast is one of the New World's most celebrated wine regions and Calera is one of California's most iconic wineries. The vindication is complete. The Chardonnay 2018 is grown on those same cool, windswept slopes — benefiting from a growing season of temperate, sunny days and cool nights that allowed slow, even ripening while preserving the bright natural acidity that Jensen always prized above everything else. The result is a wine of enticing aromatics — lemon zest, green apple, cedar and passionfruit — with mouthcoating tropical fruit on the palate, a beam of natural acidity providing structural precision, and French oak-inspired hints of toasted brioche on the finish that add warmth and complexity without ever compromising the wine's essential freshness and varietal purity. A Chardonnay that understood what it wanted to be before most of California had thought to ask the question.

Winemaker's Notes

Bright and inviting in the glass — the colour of a Chardonnay grown on cool limestone slopes with the patience and restraint that four decades of Central Coast winemaking expertise produces. On the nose, enticing and layered: lemon zest and green apple open with vibrant, cool-climate precision, followed by passionfruit adding a tropical warmth and cedar providing a quiet, refined structural dimension. On the palate, mouthcoating waves of tropical fruit arrive with genuine generosity and presence, balanced by a beam of natural acidity that keeps the wine focused, fresh and alive from first sip to last. On the finish, French oak-inspired hints of toasted brioche emerge with elegance and restraint — the final signature of a winemaker who knew exactly how much oak was enough and stopped there. A Californian Chardonnay of real distinction and everyday sophistication in equal measure. Best enjoyed with salads, shellfish, fish, cheese and white meats. Serve at 11°C.

About the Winery

Calera was founded in 1975 by Josh Jensen — a vintner who had spent years in Burgundy and returned to California with a single, unconventional conviction: that great Chardonnay required limestone soils, and that limestone soils existed in California if you were willing to look hard enough for them. He found them in the Gavilan Mountains of the Central Coast, founded Calera at elevation, and spent the following four decades helping to establish the Central Coast as one of the New World's most exciting and serious wine regions.
