Elaboration

The Pundit 2018 is the product of an extraordinary transatlantic collaboration — a project conceived by Chateau Ste. Michelle's Tenet Wines in partnership with two of France's most celebrated winemaking talents: Michel Gassier, of Domaine Gassier and Château de Nages, and Philippe Cambie, named the world's best winemaker by Robert Parker in 2010. Together with Head Winemaker Bob Bertheau, they identified Columbia Valley as what they call "an exceptional region for Syrah" and set about proving it with conviction. The blend of 95% Syrah, 3% Grenache, 1% Mourvèdre and 1% Viognier is aged for 13 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels — a deliberate marriage of old world philosophy and new world terroir that produces a wine of genuine ambition, complexity and a true sense of place.

Winemaker's Notes

Intense ruby red with deep garnet reflections and exceptional presence. On the nose, richly complex and layered with blackberries and currants interwoven with earthy notes and tobacco — a portrait of Washington Syrah at its most serious and characterful. On the palate, an evolving and rewarding experience of cherries, blueberries and dark chocolate that leads to a long, juicy and complex finish of genuine depth and distinction. A wine that challenges old assumptions about what American Syrah can be. Best enjoyed with game, lamb and duck. Serve at 16°C.

About the Winery

Tenet Wines is the result of an idea that should not have worked on paper but produced something extraordinary in the glass. When Chateau Ste. Michelle's Head Winemaker Bob Bertheau reached across the Atlantic to two of the Rhône Valley's most celebrated talents — Michel Gassier and Philippe Cambie — the shared ambition was clear: to break the old paradigms around Syrah and other Rhône varieties, and to show the world that Washington State's Columbia Valley deserved a place at the table alongside the greatest Syrah producing regions on earth. The Pundit is their most compelling argument.
