Priorat built its modern reputation on abandoned terraces and the conviction of a handful of winemakers who understood, before anyone else did, that the ancient llicorella slate soils of Gratallops were capable of producing wines of world-class concentration and mineral depth. René Barbier was the most important of those pioneers — and it was on his recommendation that Charlotte and Christopher Cannan acquired the first 10 hectares of Clos Figueras in October 1997, later expanding to 18 hectares of the classic Priorat landscape that Barbier had spent a decade championing. The Serras is the estate's most accessible and most immediately expressive wine: Grenache for warmth and fruit generosity, Carignan for the mineral backbone and longevity that the appellation's slate soils build into every vine, Syrah for dark fruit depth and structure, Cabernet Sauvignon for aromatic complexity and the long finish that makes this wine as complete as the terroir it represents.
