Abadía Da Cova 1124 2016 is a wine that begins with an act of genuine human effort that very few wines in the world can claim. The vineyards of Adegas Moure in Ribeira Sacra are classified as heroic viticulture — steep slate and granite terraces with gradients that can reach 100%, where the use of any mechanical harvesting equipment is simply impossible. Every grape that goes into this wine has been hand-picked by people who have learned to navigate these extraordinary slopes with the care and conviction that the land demands and deserves. The blend is a celebration of Galicia's ancient viticultural heritage — five native varieties grown together on predominantly slate soils with granite traces and significant clay: Mencía, Caiño, Souson, Brancellao and Garnacha Tintorera, each contributing its own distinct aromatic and structural dimension to a wine of genuine complexity and local character. After fermentation the wine is aged for seven months in oak barrels, adding structure and integration while preserving the freshness and finesse that define the best wines of Ribeira Sacra. The name 1124 refers to the year the Abbey of Cova was founded — a number that carries the deep historical roots of this remarkable Galician landscape in every bottle.

Winemaker's Notes

Violet cherry in the glass — vivid, bright and immediately evocative of the Galician light and the steep river terraces where these five native varieties grow. On the nose, complex and genuinely intense: wild herbs and spices open with aromatic energy and distinction, alongside black and red fruit that carries the natural concentration and mineral purity of slate and granite soils harvested entirely by hand. A wide and characterful aromatic portrait that reflects the extraordinary diversity of the blend — five varieties, five voices, one beautifully coherent wine. On the palate, a sensation of freshness and finesse that is unmistakably Ribeira Sacra — well-marked tannins provide structure and definition while the elegant finish carries the wine's aromatic complexity through to a long and genuinely satisfying conclusion. A wine that rewards the effort that went into making it with every single sip. Best enjoyed with red meat, lamb, cheese and cold cuts. Serve at 16°C.

Adegas Moure has been making wine in Ribeira Sacra since 1958 — long before the denomination existed, long before heroic viticulture became a celebrated concept, and long before the steep slate terraces above the Miño River became one of Spain's most talked-about wine landscapes. For the Moure family, the difficulty of this terrain has never been an obstacle — it has always been the point. Hand-picking every grape from slopes of up to 100% gradient is not a marketing choice. It is the only way to make wine here, and it has been the only way since the winery was founded. The commitment to environmental protection, to the authenticity of the raw material, and to the preservation of native Galician varieties that might otherwise disappear is not a recent innovation — it is a founding value that has guided every vintage for over six decades.
