Amphora de Cobija del Pobre 2019 is a wine that asks a genuinely interesting question: what does Mencía taste like when you remove every winemaking intervention except the most ancient one? The answer is in the glass. Crafted by Almázcara Majara from 100% Mencía grown in the D.O. Bierzo, this wine is aged for 9 months in terracotta amphora — one of the oldest vessels in the entire history of winemaking, used by civilisations across the Mediterranean and the Caucasus for thousands of years before the first oak barrel was ever coopered. Terracotta allows the wine to breathe and develop gently through micro-oxygenation while contributing absolutely nothing of its own — no wood flavour, no tannin, no toast, no vanilla. What remains is Mencía in its purest and most honest expression: ripe, vibrant, round and fruit-forward in a way that no barrel program could ever produce. A wine of ancient technique and modern conviction from a winery that has always believed Bierzo should be a source of maximum enjoyment.
