Pic-Saint-Loup is Languedoc's most celebrated and most dramatically situated appellation — a zone of limestone peaks and garrigue-covered hillsides north of Montpellier where the diurnal temperature changes between hot summer days and cool mountain nights give the grapes a natural acidity and mineral precision that the warmer coastal Languedoc cannot replicate. Domaine de l'Hortus was founded here in 1978 by Marie-Thérèse and Jean Orliac — a family project that their daughter Marie and sons François and Yves have since joined, building one of the appellation's most respected and most characterful estates across two vineyards of stunning natural beauty. The Bergerie rosé is made by direct pressing of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre — extracting the pale salmon colour and delicate berry aromatics without the extraction that skin contact would impose — producing a wine of excellent finesse, juicy freshness and the mineral firmness that Pic-Saint-Loup's calcareous soils embed in every wine grown here with genuine ambition. Every July, the family also hosts a music festival at the domaine — because a place this beautiful was always going to attract more than just winemakers.
