Cuesta del Herrero — the blacksmith's slope — takes its name from one of Finca Aylés' original historic plots, and that connection to place runs through everything this wine is. The 2020 vintage is a blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo and other varieties grown on a single plot within the Pago Aylés estate in Aragon — a Vinos de Pago property, the highest quality designation in Spanish wine, awarded to Finca Aylés in 2010 in recognition of the estate's exceptional and irreplaceable terroir. The winery has pursued 100% organic agriculture since 2016, and the commitment to the land that drives that decision is visible in every dimension of this wine. Aged in a combination of American and French oak, the 2020 Cuesta del Herrero was awarded 97 points and named Best in Show by Decanter magazine — the highest score ever awarded to a wine from Aragon, and a result that confirmed what those who know this estate have long believed.

Winemaker's Notes

Beautiful, intense picota cherry in the glass — vivid, precise and immediately inviting. On the nose, very direct and extraordinarily wide in its aromatic range: fresh fruit and ink open with energy and clarity, followed by warm spices and a marked, lingering floral character that lifts the entire experience. On the palate, this is a wine that makes its priorities clear from the first moment — elegance and fruity intensity in perfect harmony, balance and refinement hand in hand through a medium-high bodied, moderately tannic and beautifully oily finish of genuine persistence and poise. A wine that earned its 97 Decanter Best in Show with something to spare. Best enjoyed with tapas, Mediterranean food, pasta, rice dishes, cold cuts, grilled meats and hard cheeses. Serve between 14°C and 18°C.

About the Winery

Finca Aylés occupies a place in Aragonese history that few wine estates anywhere in the world can match. Located near Zaragoza, roughly halfway between Madrid and Barcelona, the estate traces its origins to the Middle Ages — and when the Ramón Reula family reunified several historic properties in the 1980s, they brought back together one of the largest private historical estates in Aragon, covering more than 3,200 hectares of land with exceptional ecological and scenic conditions. In 2010, the winery was awarded the Vinos de Pago designation — the highest level of quality a Spanish winery can achieve — in recognition of a terroir that is simply without equal in the region. The commitment to organic agriculture since 2016 is not a marketing decision. It is a statement of belief about what this land deserves.
