Finca La Emperatriz Gran Vino Tinto 2016 carries a provenance that is genuinely without parallel in the Dis&Dis collection. The estate of Baños de Rioja was originally owned by Eugenia de Montijo — Empress of France and wife of Napoleon III — who was celebrated in the 19th century for the exceptional quality of the wines produced on this land. Today, the Hernáiz family continues that legacy with a dedication to sustainable viticulture, modern technique and the time-honoured methods that have always defined this extraordinary estate. The blend of Tempranillo, Grenache and Viura — white Viura in a red wine, a practice rooted in the oldest traditions of Rioja winemaking — comes from vineyards over 70 years old that carry the accumulated depth and natural concentration of seven decades of root development in Rioja Alta's finest terroir. After fermentation, the wine ages for 20 months in French oak, developing the vanilla, spice and structural complexity that 94 Robert Parker points confirm with complete authority. A wine that honours an Empress. A wine that earns the title.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep ruby in the glass — intense, vivid and immediately commanding with the natural presence of 70-year-old vine fruit from one of Rioja Alta's most historically significant estates. On the nose, a genuinely distinctive and compelling aromatic portrait: black pepper, cumin and a touch of sweet cinnamon open with spice authority and genuine complexity, the signature of French oak maturation and ancient vine terroir working in complete and beautiful harmony. On the palate, robust tannins and an unmistakable tension deliver a pure and unadulterated expression of the estate's unique character — full-bodied, powerful and alive with the energy of a wine that has both the structure to age gracefully for years and the generosity to reward opening right now. A wine fit for the ages and worthy of the Empress whose estate it honours. Best enjoyed with lamb, beef, pork, chorizo, Iberian ham and aged cheeses including manchego, gouda and mature cheddar. Serve at 16°C.
