Portalegre is Alto Alentejo's best-kept secret — a wine-growing region in the foothills of the Serra de São Mamede where altitude and cooler temperatures give native Portuguese varieties a freshness and precision that the warmer lowland Alentejo cannot replicate. Fernando Soares established Herdade do Carvalhal here in 1999, farming 52 hectares with a deep respect for the region's long winemaking history and a commitment to expressing the authentic character of its native varieties. The Escolha is the most considered expression of that commitment: Aragonez, Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet fermented separately by variety, 30% aged in oak for four months, then bottled without filtration — because a wine from one of Portugal's most historically rooted elevated appellations deserves to arrive in the glass exactly as the land intended it.

Winemaker's Notes

Intense ruby in the glass — deep, clean and carrying the vivid colour of three native Portuguese varieties unified by careful vinification and a shared sense of place. On the nose, berry aromas with traces of ripe fruit — fresh, honest and carrying the characteristic directness of Alto Alentejo's elevated vineyards. On the palate, fine and round with balanced acidity and a persistent finish that rewards every sip with the quiet completeness of a wine made without shortcuts and bottled without filtration to preserve every dimension of its natural character. Best enjoyed with red meat, game, fatty fish and cheese. Serve at 15°C.

About the Winery

Herdade do Carvalhal was established by Fernando Soares in 1999 in Urra, in the municipality of Portalegre — 52 hectares of vineyards in one of Alto Alentejo's most historically significant and least-celebrated wine-growing regions, where the foothills of the Serra de São Mamede provide the elevation, the cooler temperatures and the long winemaking heritage that give the estate's native varieties their distinctive character and freshness. Portalegre has been producing wine for centuries — a fact that the region's modest international profile has never accurately reflected and that producers like Herdade do Carvalhal are quietly, consistently working to correct.
