The Pontigos vineyard sits beside the banks of the Alhama River in Navarra — a single plot of pre-phylloxera Garnacha whose oldest vines reach 140 years, survivors of the epidemic that destroyed the majority of Europe's ungrafted vineyards in the late 19th century and left only a handful of extraordinary parcels like this one intact. Antonio Sanz, who founded Viña Zorzal in 1989 after a lifetime in the wine world, identified Pontigos as one of those irreplaceable addresses and built Señora de las Alturas around it — a plot wine of complete terroir fidelity that combines the freshness of Navarra's elevated hills with the complexity that only roots this old, in soils this ancient, can produce. The 2018 harvest received 95 Parker points. The 2019 continues from the same ungrafted vines, the same singular parcel and the same conviction that some things in wine cannot be manufactured — only preserved and poured.
