Elaboration
Viña Sastre Crianza 2017 comes from a place and a family with a very clear sense of purpose. The Sastre family founded their winery in La Horra in 1992, beginning with 23 hectares of vineyards and a commitment to traditional cultivation and winemaking with the utmost respect for the land. That commitment has never wavered. The grapes for this Crianza come from vineyards of a minimum age of 60 years — old vines that have spent decades developing the root depth, natural concentration and complexity that younger vines simply cannot replicate. La Horra is one of Ribera del Duero's most celebrated addresses for old vine Tempranillo, and the Sastre family's decades of experience tending these specific vineyards gives them an intimacy with the land that produces wines of remarkable character, density and purity. Aged in oak with the care and patience that a 93-point Peñín score confirms, Viña Sastre Crianza 2017 is a wine of genuine quality and everyday elegance from one of Ribera del Duero's most trusted and dedicated family estates.
Winemaker's Notes
Beautiful cherry with intense garnet rims — deep, vivid and immediately communicating the quality of the old vine fruit within. On the nose, rich and expressive: the ripeness of the grape announces itself with generous black fruit and cocoa, followed by a genuinely compelling spice signature of cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper and vanilla that speaks of careful, well-integrated oak maturation of real complexity and character. On the palate, gentle and sweet from the first moment — highly fruity, with feelings of black fruit that carry the concentration and purity of 60-year-old Tempranillo vines throughout the experience. Fine toasted notes and aromatic woods add depth and elegance, and the finish is very lengthy and complex — one of the most satisfying and persistent conclusions in the Dis&Dis Ribera del Duero collection. Awarded 93 points by Guía Peñín — a score that the glass confirms without hesitation. Best enjoyed with grilled red meats, cheeses and Iberian ham. Serve at 16°C.
About the Winery
In 1992, the Sastre family made a decision that has shaped every bottle they have produced since: to found a small winery in La Horra, to tend their 23 hectares of old vineyards with traditional methods and genuine respect for the land, and to let the character of that land express itself in every vintage without compromise. Over three decades, that founding conviction has produced wines of consistent quality and genuine character — wines whose richness, density, sweetness, elegance, race, purity and freshness, as the family describes them, come not from winemaking intervention but from the deep and patient relationship between ancient vines and the remarkable soils of La Horra. Viña Sastre is not a winery trying to make an impression. It is a family trying to do justice to a piece of land they love.
