Baños de Rioja
Finca La Emperatriz is the original name of a unique property in Baños de Rioja, now owned by the Hernáiz brothers. The name, which translated means "Empress's Cellar" refers to the original owner of the vineyard sector, who was once the Empress of France, Eugenia de Montijo.
This Spanish aristocrat was the wife of Napoleon III (creator of the wine classification system, 'Cru' in Bordeaux) and dedicated herself in the second half of the 19th century to the production of high quality wines, winning a medal for them at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1878.
Years later, in 1996, the Hernáiz family bought the winery and brothers Eduardo and Víctor Hernáiz decided to revive the Empress's vineyards with the sole aim of producing excellent wines. They managed to recover the old varieties that were still growing on the estate. New ones were added shortly afterwards. Their work paid off in a short time, with the wines produced under their signature winning awards. Discover the imperial flavour of these wines!
