Mar de Frades — Sea of Friars — takes its name from the small point at the mouth of the Umia river where ancient pilgrims once landed to continue their journey to Santiago de Compostela. It is a name that carries centuries of Atlantic history, and a winery that has honoured that history since 1987 by crafting Albariño wines built entirely around the personality and character of the ocean that surrounds them. The vineyards sit in the heart of Rías Baixas, where the Atlantic influence is not a background detail but the defining force — shaping the soils, the microclimate, the natural acidity and the mineral precision that make this appellation's Albariño unlike any other white wine in Spain. The 2021 is crafted from hand-picked Albariño grapes of exceptional quality — producing a wine of vibrant citrus and tropical fruit aromatics, crisp and refreshing acidity, and the subtle mineral and herbal complexity that the rich, diverse soils of the Umia river mouth have always given to the vines planted above them. Recognised with 90 points by both Decanter and Guía Peñín. Certified vegan. Bright and luminous in the glass — the clean, pale colour of an Atlantic Albariño made with complete respect for freshness, precision and the marine character that Rías Baixas delivers when everything is done right. On the nose, ripe citrus and tropical fruit open with natural vibrancy and immediate appeal, followed by subtle hints of herbs and minerals that reflect the rich, diverse soils of the vineyards and the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean — a quiet but unmistakable presence that runs through every dimension of this wine. On the palate, crisp acidity and refreshing freshness provide the structural clarity and lively balance that make Mar de Frades one of the most naturally versatile food whites in the Dis&Dis collection — bright enough to cut through the richness of seafood, fresh enough to complement sushi, and present enough to hold its own alongside creamy pasta and light poultry. A wine that tastes of where it comes from, completely and without apology. Best enjoyed with grilled prawns, seared scallops, seafood paella, sushi and light poultry dishes.
