Burgundy built its white wine reputation on Chardonnay. But on the elevated slopes of the Hautes Côtes de Nuits, between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaune, Domaine Bonnardot has been quietly making the case for Aligoté — the region's other white grape — for three generations. The family estate covers 22 hectares, including parcels in the village and premier cru of Nuits-Saint-Georges, and it is from the high vines of the Hautes Côtes that this Bourgogne Aligoté draws its character: pale golden colour, a fruity bouquet of apple and lemon that ranges toward white flowers, and the lively, citrus-edged freshness that the elevation and the variety's natural acidity produce together with the precision of long-practiced hands. Different from the Chardonnay that dominates the conversation about Burgundy white wine — and all the more interesting for it. Three generations of the Bonnardot family have been working this land and consistently improving the quality of what it gives. This bottle is the current state of that conversation.
