De los Abuelos Viñedo Barreiros Mencía 2018 begins with an act of rescue. Oenologist Nacho Álvarez created Pago de los Abuelos out of a genuine concern — a personal mission to find, promote and bring back to life the forgotten vineyards of Bierzo, where century-old vines on ancient slate soils had been quietly surviving without the recognition or the winemaking attention they deserved. Viñedo Barreiros is one of those vineyards — and the wine it produces is the first high-quality commercial wine ever made from this historic Bierzo parcel. Only 1,000 bottles are produced. Each one carries a label made from crushed slate taken directly from the vineyard and hand-glued onto the bottle — a physical piece of the land itself, carried in your hands before you ever open it. The Mencía grapes are aged for 8 months in French oak barrels before bottling, developing the complexity and depth that the ancient vine fruit and the historic slate terroir can sustain with effortless authority. This is not simply a wine. It is a tribute — to the grandparents who tended these vines through decades when no one else cared, and to the land of Bierzo that the Romans recognised as extraordinary and that Nacho Álvarez has spent his career reminding the rest of the world about.
