Ilun 2019 is one of the most genuinely rare and distinctive wines in the Dis&Dis collection — a red Txakoli from Bizkaia crafted from Hondarrabi Beltza, a little known indigenous grape variety that was nearly forgotten and is now slowly reclaiming its rightful place in the Basque wine landscape. The name Ilun — meaning dark and god of the night in Basque — speaks to the wine's mysterious, singular character. Produced by a family winery with 40 hectares of steep southeast facing plots integrated into the dramatic Bizkaia landscape, this wine is hand harvested in October from low yield vines that produce grapes of natural concentration and Atlantic freshness. An honest, uncompromising expression of a variety and a place that the wine world is only just beginning to rediscover.

Winemaker's Notes

Clear cherry red with a beautiful vivid violet rim. On the nose, aromatic and distinctive with the natural typicality of Hondarrabi Beltza speaking clearly from the very first moment — currants and raspberries with a wild herbaceous character and an elegant point of spice that speaks of the Atlantic origin. On the palate, light and genuinely friendly with a velvety mid palate and a perfect balance of red fruit, herbaceous freshness and a clean balsamic finish of natural vitality. A wine of rare identity and Atlantic soul. Best enjoyed with sausages, white meat, fish and spicy dishes. Serve between 14°C and 16°C.

About the Winery

This family project was born in the vineyard and has never strayed far from it. Forty hectares of small plots on steep southeast facing slopes in Bizkaia — harvested by hand each October, with low yields that allow for the natural, unhurried ripening that produces wines and txakolis of genuine structure and quality. The Hondarrabi Zuri, Hondarrabi Zerratia and Hondarrabi Beltza varieties grown here are as rooted in this Basque landscape as the mountain slopes themselves — varieties that carry the identity and origin of Bizkaia in a way that no international grape variety ever could.
