Elaboration
There are old vines — and then there are 100-year-old Mencía vines in the slate soils of Bierzo, whose roots have spent a century finding the mineral depth, structural complexity and aromatic intensity that younger vineyards spend decades trying to achieve and never quite reach. Vinos Valtuille was founded in 1999 by Dimas García Canedo in Valtuille de Abajo, with the conviction that great wine begins in the vineyard and that the land deserves the same respect that every generation of his family has always given it. His children Elena and Marcos now work alongside him, extending the values of effort, care and terroir fidelity that define every wine in the range. The Viñas Viejas is their most serious and most acclaimed expression: 100-year-old Mencía from Bierzo's ancient soils, aged 11 months in fresh French oak to build the integrated complexity and depth that earned it the title of Best Spanish Wine — and that seven years of bottle development have now confirmed as completely and definitively deserved.
Winemaker's Notes
Deep cherry red in the glass — rich, vivid and carrying the concentrated colour of century-old Mencía given 11 months of French oak and seven years to find its finest expression. On the nose, very aromatic and layered: violet and blackberries with spice, earth and toasted notes building a portrait of genuine complexity and depth that the age of the vines makes entirely inevitable. On the palate, full-bodied, balanced and vigorous — excellent structure with extremely fine tannins and a fruity finish that lingers with the composed authority of a wine that carries 100 years of root memory in every sip. Best enjoyed with a variety of meats. Serve at 16°C.
About the Winery
Vinos Valtuille is a family winery founded in 1999 by Dimas García Canedo in Valtuille de Abajo, Bierzo — built on three values that have defined it across three generations: effort, respect for the land and care for every vintage. Elena and Marcos, Dimas's children, carry those values forward with the same conviction that their father brought to the first harvest, understanding that the century-old vines they farm are not raw material to be managed but heritage to be protected. The Viñas Viejas is the most eloquent expression of that understanding — and its title of Best Spanish Wine is the most public confirmation that protecting heritage and making great wine are, in Bierzo, exactly the same thing.
