The name Clos Henri inevitably brings to mind France, perhaps even Burgundy, where "clos" denotes a small enclosed vineyard, and thus a specific, delimited origin. This is the authenticity the Bourgeois family wishes to convey to their vineyard in the Wairau Valley in Marlborough, New Zealand. The French tradition of high planting density they have brought to Marlborough, resulted in the vines fighting each other for nutrients, resulting in fewer grapes but with a much greater concentration. The organically grown grapes for this wine come from the estate's younger Pinot Noir vines. The grapes ferment in open stainless steel tanks, then age for 11 months in 7,500-litre French oak barrels, which helps to underpin the wine's fine balance and tannic structure.
