Vino Nobile di Montepulciano takes its name from the Renaissance town that rises above the Val di Chiana in the province of Siena — and from the history that the word "Noble" carries: in centuries past, this wine was produced exclusively for aristocrats and noble families, a privilege reserved for those considered worthy of its quality. Today the D.O.C.G. is open to all, but the standard that earned the designation its name remains the point of reference for every serious producer in the appellation. Carpineto was founded in 1967 in Dudda, just outside Greve in Chianti, by Giancarlo Sacchet and Antonio Mario Zaccheo with a founding ambition as clear as it was demanding: to make great Sangiovese in the Tuscan Classic appellations as it had never been done before. Today the Sacchet and Zaccheo families manage five estates across 500 hectares of sustainably farmed Tuscan land, producing vegan-friendly wines in carbon-neutral wineries under the direction of chief winemaker Caterina Sacchet. The Vino Nobile Riserva is their most classical and most historically resonant expression: Prugnolo Gentile and Canaiolo aged two years in large Slavonian oak and French barrels, then given the bottle time to become something that the Renaissance aristocrats who first drank this wine would have recognised immediately as worthy of the name.
