Raso de Larrainzar Barrica 2018 is a wine with a story that begins not in a winery but in a monastery. The extraordinary estate of Ayegui in Navarra — surrounded by centenary pines, fountains, ponds and gardens of boxwood and flowers — was purchased by the Larrainzar family from the monks of the nearby Monastery of Irache over 160 years ago, and has been the family's home and viticultural heart ever since. It was here that Luis Larrainzar, great-grandfather of the winery's founder, established a vineyard and a small winery in 1891 — a winery that went on to win the gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona in 1929. Today, Miguel Canalejo Larrainzar has turned that deep family connection to the land into a modern winery of genuine ambition and quality, producing wines that honour the tradition and elegance of the estate while adding the freshness and boldness that contemporary Navarra winemaking demands. Raso de Larrainzar Barrica is the soul of that mission — a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha from vineyards at 575 metres altitude, aged briefly in oak to emphasise the freshness and fruit purity that this exceptional northern latitude terroir produces so naturally.
