The Perfect Wines for Weddings and Baptisms
Two years into the Covid pandemic, it seems that weddings and baptisms are returning to normal, or at least to a new normal marked by smaller events with only those close to the family.
Because such events come after a long and stressful period of preparations, we thought that at least the choice of wine should be an easy task.
In this week´s article we'll talk about the basic rules to keep in mind when choosing wines for weddings and baptisms, and at the end of the article, you'll be able to discover our special recommendations.
Wine is one of the main drinks in any festive menu, as its versatility when it comes to pairing it with dishes makes it the star of any party.
But choosing a good wine comes with a lot of questions: does it go with the menu, how should it be served, will it please everyone, should I choose wines of different strengths, and many more.
The Perfect Wines for Weddings
Preparing a wedding can be very difficult, from choosing the bride's dress to the groom's outfit, flowers, rings, invitations, every element needs to be overseen. Organizing a wedding can become a real odyssey, as no detail can be left to chance. Of course, one of the most important aspects of a wedding is the choice of a restaurant, where the food and wine need to pair perfectly to have the perfect party.
So the choice of wedding wine is something that depends primarily on the bride and groom, their tastes and preferences. Then you have to think about the guests, the season of the year in which the wedding is being celebrated and the actual organization of the wedding.
Wedding wines should be easy for everyone to understand and easy to drink, i.e. not too full-bodied or too acidic.
If there is to be a reception for guests, you can opt for any type of fresh sparkling wine such as cava or champagne. Choose white wines for creamy starters, red wines for main courses, and elegant rose or sparkling wines for cake.
What if, instead of celebrating a big wedding, we offer something simpler, outdoors, a more informal wedding surrounded by friends and family, where we opt for catering?
We will have to opt for different wines for different tastes and which can pair well with starters, seafood or red meat dishes.
One of the most famous sparkling wines in the world is champagne, which has always been associated with celebrations; wedding champagne is always served with the wedding cake as a traditional ceremony. Who can imagine a wedding without cava or champagne to toast the bride and groom? Neither do we!
Wines for Baptism
In the case of christenings, the party is smaller and the menu is not as varied as for weddings.
Generally speaking, starters or very elaborate dishes are chosen for christenings, which pair well with very fresh white wines and sparkling wines, either cava or champagne.
So we'll leave the white wines with ageing in barrels and the young red wines and aged wines for the main courses. For the final dessert, opt for a fragrant rose wine or aromatic sweet wines.
Our Wine Recommendations for Weddings:
A recommendation of some of the wines served at weddings that best suit all audiences.
Camí de Cormes, with a pronounced Empordà, Spanish character, is a white wine made from Grenache and Macabeo from old vines, fermented in barrels and aged for four months on lees in French oak barrels. Straw-yellow in colour, clean and bright, it seduces on the nose with aromas of white fruit and chamomile flowers, and is full and voluminous on the palate, with a slightly mineral finish and a long, lingering aftertaste.
Sommos Colección Gewürztraminer, a wine whose grapes are harvested at night to control the alcohol volume. It undergoes a six-hour skin maceration to extract the full potential of the variety and is fermented in cement tanks before being aged for four months in new French oak barrels. Citrus notes on the nose and a pronounced floral character for a balanced, round and very elegant wine.
Peña Zuela Blanco, from D.O. Campo de Borja, Spain, a single varietal Grenache, expressive and delicate, with a very fruity nose and floral notes that mark the typicality of the territory. This white wine from Bodegas Ainzón, is oily and glyceric and has a fresh and mineral finish that gives it elegance and personality.
Juve & Camps Brut Nature Reserva de la Familia, made from Macabeo, Xarello and Parellada grapes. Although it was originally created for Juve family consumption, today it is one of the most consumed cavas in the world, thanks to its seductive capacity due to its fine and delicate bubbles. Deep, intense and elegant, it offers us notes of ripe white fruit and hints of toast with citrus notes. One of the best cavas for celebrations such as weddings or christenings.
Taittinger Brut Reserva Champagne, a must-have champagne for any important celebration, with aromas of white fruits and stone fruits such as peach. Smooth and sophisticated bubbles with perfectly formed rosettes. Bold and fresh on the palate, open and expressive with a slightly honeyed finish.
Serras del Priorat 2019 by the winery Clos Figueres, Spain, a red wine made from Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Syrah. Showing a beautiful cherry red colour, this wine is an explosion of red and black fruit flavours with a slightly balsamic background. On the palate it is full-bodied and fresh, with mineral sensations characteristic of the Priorat. It has a long, lingering finish.
Cincuenta 2016, a Tempranillo single varietal red wine, aged for fourteen months in new French oak barrels. Ruby red in colour with purple highlights, the nose has notes of ripe fruit, compote and toasted notes from the barrel. On the palate it has a voluminous entry with good structure and ripe and very pleasant tannins. Good balance for a sweet and long finish.
