Bodegas Gorka Izaguirre

Where is it located?

Bodegas Gorka Izaguirre is located in the northern part of Spain, in the Basque country. The winery owns 40 hectares divided into little parcels that are integrated in the beautiful landscape of Bizkaia. The vineyards are very steep, and are located facing southeast, so they can receive the sun every morning and the breeze of the Cantabrian sea.

History

The winery was founded in 2005 by Eneko Atxa, a three-star michelin chef and his uncle, Gorka Izaguirre. They designed an unique project in the Basque country, in the northern part of Spain, where they wanted to unite the high-cuisine with the exciting world of wine, becoming a referent in both areas.

The goal of the winery is to create the highest quality Txakoli wines that are able to reflect the grape varieties that are unique in the world and their surroundings.

Winemaking Techniques

Bodegas Gorza Izaguirre grows two types of unique Atlantic grapes; Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Zerratia.

Hondarrabi Zuri is a white grape typical of the Basque country and is used to produce Txakoli wines. The grape produces fresh whites, full of energy, and fruitness with good acidity. Given that it has been grown in fresh climates, the wines have a low alcohol content of between 12 - 13 %, so they are very easy to drink and fresh.

Hondarrabi Zerratia is a white grape grown in the Basque country. It is used to produce Txakoli wines. The wines made with this autochthon grape are elegant, and complex, with volume and aromas of white fruit.

They are manually harvested in October. The low yield of the vineyard allows the winemakers to create unique and structured Txakoli wines.
