Rioja Luis Cañas Gran Reserva 2014 is a Spanish red wine from Rioja. It is made with grapes from the winery's vines in the towns of Villabuena, Navaridas, Samaniego, and Baos de Ebro, which have an average age of almost 50 years. These estates in Rioja Alavesa have nutrient-depleted soils, resulting in low yields and higher quality produced fruit.The wine is aged in barrels where it undergoes a second fermentation (malolactic) before being stored for 24 months in new French and American oak barrels (70 % American, 30 % French). Once its aging is finished, the red is bottled and stored in the cellar where it will rest for another 36 additional months to finish refining.

Winemaker's Notes

Rioja Luis Cañas Gran Reserva 2014 is a Spanish red wine with bright ruby red colour and a very high layer. It has a powerful nose that emits lovely fruity aromas as well as wood from its aging. Other fragrant notes of thyme, rosemary, and tobacco can be noted in the background. It is a fantastic reserve with a well-balanced mid-palate that reminds us of ripe fruits, citrus, and candied fruit. An excellent Reserva wine to serve with meat dishes like roast lamb, game, and grilled red meats, but it also goes well with Iberian ham and tables of strong-flavoured cured cheeses. The optimal temperatures for its service are suggested between 16ºC and 18ºC.

About the Winery

For over a century, Luis Cañas family has been dedicated to the production and sale of traditional young wines made by the carbonic maceration method, in La Rioja. These wines were made in the Cueva de los Curas, an old cellar dug out of the ground, which still forms part of the landscape of the area today. The personality of Juan Luis, one of the most restless and innovative winemakers in the country, and the experience and know-how of the winery's team have made Luis Cañas wines worldwide appreciated and have been awarded some of the most prestigious awards in the wine world
